National Chemistry Week - October 18 - 24, 2015
Invitation to Participate in the NCW 2015 Illustrated Poem Contest
September 19, 2015
SAZACS invites you to participate in the National Chemistry Week (NCW), which runs from October 18-24, 2015.
The goal of NCW is to promote the value of chemistry in everyday life. The NCW 2015 theme is "Chemistry Colors Our World". This exciting topic allows students explore the chemistry of food colors and fireworks, natural and artificial dyes, pigments and chemistry of light, among other topics. American Chemical Society has prepared multiple resources for grade K-12 students which can be accessed at: http://www.acs.org/content/acs/en/education/outreach/ncw/educational-resources/2015.html
To promote the National Chemistry Week, SAZACS is sponsoring illustrated poem contest for students in grades K- 12. This cross-curricular activity linking Science with English Language and Arts inspires students to write and illustrate a poem using the NCW theme.
SAZACS will award $25 gift certificate for the best poster in each grade category, and the winning poster will be reproduced on the SAZACS web page. Winners of the local contest will compete on the national level. ACS will award $300 to first-place and $150 to second-place National Contest winners in each grade category. More information about the contest and past contest winners can be seen at: http://www.acs.org/content/acs/en/education/outreach/ncw/ncw-illustrated-poem-contest.html
Contest entries accompanied by the entry form should be mailed to SAZACS, PO Box 43096, Tucson, AZ 85733. The deadline to submit the illustrated poem to the local section is November 6, 2015.
Please download the flyer with the information about the contest and the entry form. We especially encourage elementary- and middle-school students to participate. Last year SAZACS received over 100 contest entries from students in Southern Arizona!
